Yria – Temple of Dionysos, Livadi
Open: Tuesday to Sunday 08:30 – 15:00
The Yria Temple, 10km south of the main town, in the region of Livadi, used to be the official temple of the urban centre of Naxos and was dedicated to the god Dionysos. The temple of Yria demonstrates clearly, step by step, one layer on top of the other, its evolution from a single-spaced temple (approx. 800 B.C.) made from wood and mud bricks, until the period it functioned as a hekatonmpedon archaic temple, of Ionic architectural character, which had a sanctuary (a space for worship), a marble porch (a colonnade dramatising the entrance to enhance its holiness), a marble altar and a marble indoor colonnade. The restoration works of the temple have been completed (easily accessed from the village of Glynado).
