One of the most picturesque and traditional villages of Naxos, is the village of Potamia. It is only 8km away from the port and is located in a green valley with centesimal sycamores and many orchards. Its name, meaning ‘rivers’, was given because of the rivers that flow through the village. It has a population of 362 inhabitants and it consists of 4 settlements: Apano Potamia, Mesaia Potamia, Kato Potamia and Lierado. Walk around the stone footpaths, visit Apano Kastro and Kori tis Potamias (a statue of a woman), the water mill (Apano Potamia) and the marble ‘Faraskou water spring’. Moreover, on the south-western side of Kato Potamia, you will come across the estate of Agios Mamas and Panagia, a byzantine church of the 9th centrury and another 34 old churches and chapels scattered around the four settlements.
