Its is a monastery/fort built in between the village of Galini and the sea, on the highest point of the valley of Egaron , hence its name, as in Greek ‘ypsilo’ means ‘high up’. Panayia Ypsilotera (or tower of Ypsilis) was founded in 1600 B.C from the Greek Orthodox Iakovo Kokko and was used as military base and shelter for the area’s farmers, during their struggle against the Franks.
