The name Koronida identifies the commune and not the village itself, probably taking its name from the notion of the many small villages (in Greek known as komoi) in the district. It is built on the fertile hillside of mount Koronos, at an altitude of 650m. approximately north, north-east and north-west of Naxos in the region referred to as Malliasmena Horafia. A wild scenery, lush greenery, with oak trees and sycamores trees, reed, gorges, rocks in combination with the traditional architecture of the island consisting of mud bricks, wells and chapels, combine together to offer visitors a unique view.
Visit the beaches of these settlements and try the local traditional products. Also, for those who love hiking, the Faneromeni dam and traditional settlement of Skeponio – with wild towering trees and reeks flowing in between are great spots for a walk through the difficult footpaths of Komiaki.
Lastly, there are a number of monuments worthwhile seeing, amongst these is the very ancient vaulted Mycenaean tomb in the valley of Axos, the area of Kanas with the Greek castles, the monastery of Aghia, the later-byzantine temple of Theoskepasti, the monastery of Faneromeni and the tower of Skeponio, built on top of a cliff which in the past, was used as a fort against the pirates.
